George H. Merkel, Jr.

MerkelGeorgeJr 2016-4084316     Our brother in faith, George H. Merkel, Jr., 78, of Robesonia, a member of St. Paul's UCC in Robesonia, passed away Monday, January 23, 2017 at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
 
     George was the husband of the late Shirley J. (Matthew) Merkel who died May 14, 2002.
 

     Born in Womelsdorf, George was a son of the late George H. and Mary (Moyer) Merkel, Sr.

 

     George retired from the Wernersville State Hospital.  He started as an orderly, then continued as a vector control specialist, and retired in 1990 after 33 ½ years as the Mechanic in the Carpool.  He also served on the fire rescue for several years.

 

     He was a local tinsmith, and a Ford Hot Rod-der by heart.  He was always fixing old hot rods and was one of the first members of the South Mountain Rod & Custom.

 

     He is survived by two sons, George H. Merkel, III, husband of Alice M., Robesonia, and Jeffrey S. Merkel, Newmanstown; a daughter, Donna J., wife of Gerald E. Folk, Robesonia; two brothers, Ronald Merkel, husband of Carol, Mt. Aetna, and Paul Merkel, Newmanstown; three sisters, Patsy wife of Robert Dries, Robesonia, Peggy, wife of Warren Miller, Newmanstown, and Penny, wife of Rick Behney, Manheim; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren: Michael "Simon" Merkel and Jackson Merkel.

 

     Services will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, 243 West Penn Avenue, Wernersville with George's nephew the Rev. Matthew Behney officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00AM, Saturday.  Burial will be in Heidelberg Cemetery.

 

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association PO Box 15120 Chicago, IL 60693 or to the American Lung Association, Donation Processing Center, PO Box 7000, Albert Lea, MN 56007-8001.
